Harry Maguire has turned down a lucrative approach from David Beckham’s Inter Miami to commit his future to Manchester United, reports BritPanorama.

The 33-year-old centre-back, whose contract was set to expire this summer, has signed a one-year extension with an option for an additional 12 months at Old Trafford. His decision comes amidst interest from Italian champions Napoli, which suggests his marketability remains high despite previous setbacks.

According to reports, Beckham intended to sign Maguire to bolster his squad in Miami, a prospect that included the opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi. However, the defender, despite the allure of the move, has shown no interest in transferring to the MLS.

“The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see, and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us,” said Maguire following the announcement of his contract extension. “You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad,” he added, underscoring his commitment to the club’s vision.

The Sheffield-born player has now made 266 appearances for the Red Devils. This contract renewal marks a remarkable turnaround for Maguire, who lost the captaincy to former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023 after a challenging period. Since then, he has re-established himself in the squad, becoming a key figure under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Maguire has featured in the starting lineup for every one of Carrick’s ten matches in charge, demonstrating his importance to the team’s strategy. Previously a £85 million signing from Leicester in 2019, he holds the record for the highest transfer fee for a defender.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has recently reinstated Maguire into the national setup, after an 18-month hiatus from the Three Lions, just ahead of the summer World Cup. This decision follows Tuchel’s consistent communication with the player during his recovery from injury that ruled him out of nine club matches.

Maguire has expressed his ambition to further his career path at United, intending to pursue coaching qualifications while still an active player. “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day,” he remarked, illustrating his dedication both on and off the pitch.

Following his contract renewal, director of football Jason Wilcox commended Maguire’s character and leadership qualities, stating, “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.”

As Maguire prepares for the next chapter at Manchester United, he will miss the upcoming Premier League clash against Leeds due to suspension after receiving a red card in last month’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. His commitment to the club continues to draw attention, reminding many of how quickly perceptions can shift in the world of football.
