Shooting near Players Championship leaves two dead

A gunman shot dead two people in a Walgreens car park situated close to the Players Championship venue in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Friday evening before fleeing onto the TPC Sawgrass golf course, reports BritPanorama.

St Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, who allegedly fired multiple shots at the victims at approximately 10:30pm local time. The sheriff described the incident as a domestic violence situation.

Police launched an extensive manhunt for Barrios, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday. Authorities subsequently apprehended him at around 8am that morning, bringing the manhunt to a close.

Tournament organisers responded to the unfolding situation by postponing spectator entry for Saturday’s third round until 9am. The PGA attributed this decision to “operational considerations” following the incident.

Sheriff Hardwick indicated that police dog units tracked Barrios as he traversed the TPC Sawgrass course during the overnight hours. He noted that the suspect picked up a PGA Tour radio before discarding it as he continued to evade law enforcement.

Barrios reportedly stole a black BMW and headed north towards Nassau County, approximately an hour’s drive from the golf venue. Officers from Nassau County engaged in a chase, ultimately forcing the vehicle off the road, causing it to crash into a wooded area.

After a foot pursuit, Barrios was arrested and remains in custody. Both victims later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Nassau County officials released his photo during the manhunt, urging residents to exercise caution in the area.

Hardwick revealed that Barrios had a long criminal history and confirmed that he knew the victims. He stated, “His criminal history is embarrassing. It makes me sick to my stomach,” adding that Barrios was out of prison on probation at the time of the shooting.

The tragic events shed light on the unsettling realities of violence amid what should be a celebration of sport, echoing the challenges communities face in maintaining safety at high-profile events.
