Pep Guardiola remains tight-lipped on Manchester City future ahead of FA Cup clash
Pep Guardiola has refrained from disclosing his plans regarding his future at Manchester City when questioned by journalists prior to today’s FA Cup match against Liverpool, reports BritPanorama.
The 55-year-old manager’s contract at the Etihad Stadium extends until 2027, yet he provided no insights on whether he intends to continue beyond the current campaign.
“I spoke many times about that,” Guardiola stated, sidestepping inquiries about his contractual situation. He had intended to make a decision during the recent international break concerning the fulfilment of his contract.
While City publicly maintains that they expect their manager to remain for the next season, club insiders have indicated that Guardiola’s potential departure this summer would not come as a surprise.
Today’s focus shifts to the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at the Etihad. Liverpool arrives in Manchester having achieved just two victories in their last six matches across all competitions, compounded by a challenging Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon.
Despite the Merseyside club’s recent difficulties, Guardiola has urged his squad to remain vigilant. “They have been the biggest rival,” he remarked and underscored Liverpool’s significant financial investment last season as evidence of their enduring ambitions.
“They are a top contender with top-class players. Hopefully, we can perform at the level that we did against Arsenal to reach the next step,” Guardiola added.
The City manager faces a selection dilemma regarding Phil Foden’s inclusion in the starting lineup against Liverpool. The midfielder experienced a challenging international window with England, and national team manager Thomas Tuchel has suggested that Foden’s current form might jeopardise his place in the World Cup squad.
Nevertheless, Guardiola dismissed concerns about Foden’s confidence or abilities, replying with “Zero” when asked if he had doubts about the 25-year-old. He praised Foden’s remarkable contributions to the club’s successes, acknowledging that fluctuations in form are typical for a player with a lengthy career.
City has previously defeated Liverpool on two occasions this season, first securing a 3-0 victory at the Etihad in November, followed by a 2-1 success at Anfield in February.
As the teams prepare to face off, the question remains whether Guardiola’s future will continue to loom over Manchester City as they aim for further cup success.
