Pep Guardiola reaffirms commitment to Manchester City amid Enzo Maresca speculation
Pep Guardiola has reiterated his desire to stay on at Manchester City amid fresh rumours surrounding Enzo Maresca, reports BritPanorama.
The long-serving City manager announced last month his intention to fulfil his contract at the Etihad Stadium, which extends until the summer of 2027. This statement follows speculation that City had identified Maresca, a former assistant to Guardiola, as a potential successor should the Spaniard decide to step down this summer.
Maresca has since parted company with Chelsea, dramatically leaving Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day. Claims suggest that the Italian’s exit occurred after he informed the club about discussions with City regarding a future role.
Guardiola, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his appointment this year, praised his former assistant, stating, “The only (thing) I can say is that Chelsea, I think, from my point of view, lose an incredible, incredible manager, incredible person. But this (is a) decision from the hierarchy from Chelsea, so (I have) nothing to say.” He added that his position at City remains secure, expressing confidence in the club’s management and stating, “I have a contract. I said a thousand million times. It’s 10 years here, I will leave one day but I have a contract. I’m happy. I want to fight with my team.”
As City prepares to face Chelsea again— their next opponents on Sunday—Guardiola admitted uncertainty about the upcoming match due to the managerial situation at Chelsea. “We don’t talk much if we don’t know what the opponent’s going to be like because we don’t know which manager will be sitting,” he noted. The title-chasing City aims to return to winning ways following a 0-0 draw against Sunderland on New Year’s Day, which left them four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
On a positive note, the return of midfielder Rodri in the second half marked a significant moment for City, who have missed his presence during his recovery from a hamstring injury. Guardiola commented, “He changed the game. He proved in 45 minutes in his position he is the best.” With such dynamics unfolding, it remains clear that Guardiola’s commitment to City is unwavering, while the looming question of Maresca’s future continues to capture attention in the footballing world.
