Guardiola plans to reach out to Mourinho after City secure top-eight Champions League spot

Manchester City secures top-eight finish in Champions League

Manchester City’s hopes of advancing in the Champions League were bolstered by a dramatic final moment in Benfica’s match against Real Madrid, which concluded with Benfica winning 4-2, securing a crucial victory, reports BritPanorama.

The match, watched keenly by City’s players and coaching staff in their dressing room, reached a heightened sense of urgency when Benfica, leading 3-2, sent goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin forward into the Madrid penalty area during injury time.

City’s contingent experienced a wave of alarm as they feared that a Madrid equaliser could eliminate them from contention for February’s knockout rounds. Their anxiety turned to relief and celebration as Trubin scored, solidifying City’s eighth-place finish in the group, thus avoiding the peril of the playoff stage.

City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the confusion among his squad as they observed the unfolding drama in Lisbon, expressing surprise at the decision to send Trubin upfield. “We were all there so we didn’t know Benfica needed a goal to qualify so when the goalkeeper goes up, we say, ‘why you go?’ because Madrid can equalise and we are out,” he explained. Despite the panic, Guardiola commended the strategic move, noting, “But it was a good strategy for Jose to score the fourth goal, right!”

City had earlier done their part by defeating Galatasaray 2-0 at home, ensuring their advancement remained viable. Goals from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki secured this victory, although the evening was marred by the departure of Jérémy Doku with a calf injury, which Guardiola indicated cast a shadow over an otherwise positive outing.

Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Guardiola remarked that the first half was more cohesive than the second. He expressed satisfaction at finishing in the top eight, especially considering the competitive nature of the Champions League in recent years. “I’m really pleased we don’t play in the playoff stage and hopefully we can arrive in March [for the last 16] at our best,” he added.

As City looks ahead, there remains a distinct sense of uncertainty about the competition’s evolving nature, underscoring how tightly contested European football has become. It was a vivid reminder of the fine margins at play in football, where jubilation and despair often dance on the edge of a single moment.
