Granit Xhaka involved in heated exchange with fans during Sunderland’s defeat

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has opened up after his side’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, with Granit Xhaka involved in a row with home fans, reports BritPanorama.

The Switzerland international was filmed having a tense exchange with Hammers supporters and, at one point, even appeared to beckon for them to come down and address him directly, which briefly halted the match.

The incident compounded a woeful day for Sunderland, who lost 3-1 following first-half goals from Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen, and Mateus Fernandes.

Le Bris, speaking after the game, admitted he was disappointed by his team’s performance in the capital. “They were better than us; they showed good quality, they started better, more aggressiveness and more composure with the ball. We were the opposite,” he said. “The balance went in their favour at the beginning and they scored; it was well deserved.”

Sunderland’s second-half reaction was slightly improved, as they managed a goal and created opportunities for a second. However, Le Bris acknowledged that West Ham were simply the superior side. “We have to accept it,” he noted.

When pressed about his team’s poor start to the match, the Frenchman struggled for an explanation. “It’s tough to say because probably there are multiple reasons,” he said, highlighting the challenges faced by a newly promoted side in a tough Premier League environment.

“At least it shows that when you are not at the level, the league will punish you,” he added, emphasizing the need for humility and hard work. “We haven’t experienced this much, but we are still a newly promoted side, and it is normal to have this kind of experience.”

The incident involving Xhaka was undoubtedly the biggest talking point of the match. Le Bris, however, indicated that he was unaware of what specifically triggered the Switzerland international’s outburst, as he missed the contest due to injury.

As Sunderland regroup ahead of their next fixture against Burnley, it remains clear that the road to adaptation in the Premier League can be a tough one, as evidenced by their recent struggles. Meanwhile, West Ham has rejuvenated their season with three consecutive victories, providing them with crucial momentum ahead of their match against Chelsea.
