Grandson of Red Rum trainer set for Grand National debut with lucky charm

Toby McCain-Mitchell carries a piece of history into the Grand National

Toby McCain-Mitchell will tuck a lock of Red Rum’s hair into his gloves when he takes on the world’s most famous steeplechase this Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The 24-year-old jockey embodies a storied racing lineage, being the grandson of Ginger McCain, who famously trained Red Rum to three Grand National victories in 1973, 1974, and 1977.

In 2011, his uncle Donald continued the family’s winning legacy with Ballabriggs, and now McCain-Mitchell aims to join this elite circle by partnering with the 125-1 outsider Top Of The Bill, trained by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies.

Preserving a deep emotional connection to Red Rum, McCain-Mitchell will don a keepsake that his mother Joanne has safeguarded since the horse’s passing in 1995.Over the years, strands from the beloved horse’s mane have been stitched into bridles of family runners tackling the daunting Aintree fences, a tradition that the McCains uphold with pride.

Speaking about his connection to Red Rum, McCain-Mitchell stated, “I’ll put a lock I have in my gloves on Saturday. It’s a bit silly but it’s just for good luck.” He justified this superstition by noting Red Rum’s extraordinary performance over the Aintree obstacles, expressing optimism: “He used to do well over them, so it can’t do any harm.”

The three-day Randox Grand National Festival commences today, culminating in Saturday’s feature event where McCain-Mitchell hopes his family talisman will bring fortune once more. How the race unfolds is yet to be determined.

A win would not only affirm the McCain legacy but also highlight how the past continues to influence the present in this timeless sport, reflecting the delicate balancing act between tradition and ambition.
