Gina Schumacher reflects on her journey in new documentary

Gina Schumacher, the 29-year-old daughter of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, will feature in a new ZDF documentary that explores how equestrian sport became her lifeline following her father’s devastating accident, reports BritPanorama.

“Pferdestärke” is set for release on 17 April and offers rare personal insights from the world-class western rider. The documentary marks a notable occasion in which family members have publicly discussed the impact of the 2013 skiing accident that left her father with a traumatic brain injury.

Following the incident in the French Alps, Gina revealed how crucial horses became in her life: “After dad’s accident, I really got stuck in because I had to do something. The horses have always been important. But since then they’ve really … well, I couldn’t do without horses. They helped me get through it all.”

Since that time, the Schumacher family has maintained strict privacy regarding Michael’s health, with very little public information emerging about his condition. Gina, however, has emerged as a prominent figure in equestrian sport, claiming two World Championship titles during the summer of 2025 at the family’s equestrian facility in Givrins, near Nyon, Switzerland.

The documentary not only highlights Gina’s competitive achievements but also provides viewers a glimpse into the infrastructure supporting her rise as a leading competitor. The family operates ranches in both Switzerland and the United States, a setting that underpins the narrative of the film.

Corinna Schumacher, now a successful breeder, also appears in the documentary, recalling a prescient statement made by Michael over 25 years ago: “Michael once said to me – when Gina was ten years old: Gina will be much better than you. Because she is more selfish.” This perspective on ambition resonates with Gina, who acknowledges the necessity of a focused approach in sports and expresses gratitude for her opportunities.

With her journey from coping mechanism to world champion status at the forefront, Gina maintains a grounded outlook: “My parents made it possible for me,” she says. “That’s why it was always important to me to work hard for it and make the best of it.”

In presenting Gina’s story, the documentary encapsulates a complex narrative that intertwines personal loss with competitive spirit, highlighting how resilience can blossom in unexpected circumstances.
