Ghana dismisses Otto Addo as manager ahead of World Cup
Ghana have dismissed Otto Addo as manager of the Black Stars with just 72 days remaining until the 2026 World Cup kicks off in North America, reports BritPanorama.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed the departure of the 50-year-old coach on Tuesday morning, just hours after a 2-1 friendly loss to Germany in Stuttgart. This defeat further extended Ghana’s disappointing run, marking their fourth straight loss.
Deniz Undav’s late strike sealed the win for Germany following an equaliser by Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu, highlighting ongoing struggles for the Black Stars. The GFA stated it had “parted ways” with Addo “effective immediately,” expressing gratitude for his contributions while wishing him well in future endeavours.
Ghana’s recent form is concerning, with a particularly humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria just days prior. These setbacks came after consecutive losses to Japan and South Korea during the November international window. Despite having players of notable quality, including Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo and Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus, Addo could not lead the team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
His tenure, which included eight victories, five draws, and nine defeats across 22 matches, began after he led the Black Stars on an interim basis during the Qatar World Cup, where they exited at the group stage. The Hamburg-born coach had a playing career that included a Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund and had originally returned to international management in March 2024.
The four-time African champions’ inability to qualify for the continental tournament has marked a significant decline for a team with a storied footballing history. Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 18, followed by a crucial encounter with England in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on June 23. They will conclude their Group L fixtures against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
As the Black Stars prepare for the World Cup with a new coaching direction on the horizon, the pressure mounts. The GFA has yet to announce potential candidates, but they have indicated that they will communicate their new technical direction in due course. In the competitive landscape of international football, the stakes have never been higher for Ghana.
