Gerwyn Price withdraws from Players Championship 8

Gerwyn Price has pulled out of Players Championship 8 at the eleventh hour, with confirmation coming on Tuesday afternoon that the Welsh star wouldn’t be competing in Leicester, reports BritPanorama.

The former world champion was set to take to the oche at the Mattioli Arena but withdrew just hours before play was due to begin.

This announcement adds Price to a notable list of absentees, which includes Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, both of whom are also missing from the tournament.

The timing is significant given Price’s recent public frustration with darts officials following the Premier League event in Berlin. His concerns about conditions during the match were evident when he took to Instagram after a semi-final defeat to Littler.

In his post, Price expressed discontent, stating, “So bloody frustrating. Luke’s playing really well at the moment. But to have to play in such shocking conditions it’s so bloody hard.”

He had also suggested rather sarcastically that “it might be easier to play on the beach front outdoors every week so we know what to expect,” highlighting his dissatisfaction with the playing conditions that had faced him in Berlin.

While the exact nature of his grievance wasn’t entirely clear, there have been speculations regarding a breeze circulating within the 17,000-capacity venue that affected play. Price has also voiced opposition to potential changes in the Premier League format, particularly regarding the reintroduction of challengers.

He argued that such changes would be unfair, explaining that different players would face opponents of varying skill levels, which could lead to unequal competition.

As the tournament continues, all eyes will also be on Ryan Searle, who is aiming to claim consecutive titles in Leicester after his victory at Players Championship 7 on Monday evening. With Price’s absence, Searle has a clear path to defend his recent success.

In the unpredictable world of darts, the balance of power shifts quickly, illustrating how one player’s withdrawal can create opportunities for others and reshape the competitive landscape.
