Gerwyn Price voices frustrations after semi-final defeat to Luke Littler
Gerwyn Price launched a furious social media tirade following his Premier League semi-final defeat to Luke Littler at Berlin’s Uber Arena, reports BritPanorama.
The former world champion suffered a 6-4 loss to the 17-year-old sensation during the eighth night of the competition, marking a second consecutive defeat to Littler within a week. In the previous week’s final, Price had squandered a significant 5-0 lead against the same opponent.
Following the match, Price took to Instagram to vent his frustrations about what he termed “shocking conditions” at the German venue. Despite acknowledging Littler’s exemplary form, Price’s anger was palpable as he expressed his dissatisfaction with the environment in which they played.
In his post, he remarked: “So bloody frustrating. Luke’s playing really well atm. But to have to play in such shocking conditions it’s so bloody hard.” He further suggested that perhaps it would be preferable to play in outdoor venues, quipping about the unpredictable nature of such conditions.
Despite his evident frustration, Price communicated gratitude towards his supporters, stating, “Thanks all for the amazing support once again you really are amazing. Onto next week it is,” indicating his focus on upcoming fixtures.
The specific nature of Price’s complaint remains unclear, though speculation has focused on potential air currents affecting the 17,000-capacity arena. Draughts have long troubled professional darts players, as even minor air movements can significantly impact the trajectory of thrown darts.
Price’s pointed reference to outdoor beach conditions underscored his belief that the indoor environment in Berlin was no better. Nevertheless, the match result stood, enabling Littler to advance and claim victory.
Littler’s triumph elevated him to the top of the Premier League standings, following Jonny Clayton’s early exit, while Clayton still holds onto second place. Price and Michael van Gerwen are positioned for the remaining play-off spots.
After the match, Littler remarked to Sky Sports, “It wasn’t too bad tonight. I played very well and the crowd were on my side at times.” He characterised the evening as potentially his best performance in the Premier League to date.
Adjustments to his darts were noted by Littler, following their use in Saudi Arabia, contributing to his successful strategy. “I knew if I won the night I would go top. Tonight has just gone really well. I am glad to have the weekend off and onto Manchester,” he concluded.
