Geoff Burrow, father of rugby league icon, dies at 2025

Geoff Burrow, father of rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has passed away today following a period of ill health, Leeds Rhinos have confirmed, reports BritPanorama.

The Leeds-born campaigner devoted himself to raising awareness for the motor neurone disease community after his son received his devastating diagnosis in December 2019. His death comes in the wake of Rob’s own battle with the condition, during which the family became passionate advocates for MND awareness and care.

Rob Burrow, a rugby league legend who spent his entire career with Leeds Rhinos, died in June 2024 at the age of 41. Following his diagnosis, the Burrows campaigned tirelessly for greater visibility and support for those living with motor neurone disease, shining a spotlight on the challenges faced by the MND community across the country.

Geoff played an instrumental role in securing better funding and care provisions for MND patients, attending the inauguration of a state-of-the-art MND facility at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds last year. This centre represented a significant milestone for the community he worked so hard to support and was a testament to his unwavering commitment.

Leeds Rhinos described Geoff as someone who consistently championed those lacking a voice. He also had a long career as a trade union representative, standing up for the rights of others and echoing his dedication to advocacy throughout his life.

The club highlighted his significant influence in nurturing Rob’s passion for rugby, reminiscing about taking him to his first match at Headingley, thereby igniting a lifelong connection to the sport. In a heartfelt tribute, Leeds Rhinos expressed their condolences to Geoff’s wife, Irene, and the Burrow family, requesting privacy during this difficult time.

In their statement, they described Geoff as “a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,” reflecting how deeply embedded he was in the lives of his loved ones. Amid the grief, there lies a reminder of how impactful one individual’s dedication can be in raising awareness and fostering support within a community faced with adversity.
