Gennaro Gattuso resigns as Italy manager after World Cup qualification failure

Gennaro Gattuso steps down as Italy’s national team manager

Gennaro Gattuso has departed as Italy’s national team manager following a mutual agreement with the football federation, bringing an end to a turbulent chapter for the Azzurri, reports BritPanorama.

The former AC Milan midfielder’s exit follows a devastating penalty shootout loss to Bosnia in the World Cup play-off final. Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament marks a significant decline for a nation historically regarded as a powerhouse in football.

Italy have now failed to reach three successive World Cups, a catastrophic run for one of football’s most storied nations. According to Sky Sport Italia, Gattuso reached an agreement with the FIGC to step aside, with formal confirmation expected shortly.

This decision signals a dramatic shift in direction for Italian football, which is seeking new leadership ahead of friendly matches scheduled for June. The shockwaves from the qualification failure have triggered a broader overhaul of the leadership structure within Italian football.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina resigned following the Bosnia defeat, despite urging Gattuso to remain during crisis talks hours before. Gianluigi Buffon, serving as head of Italy’s delegation, also relinquished his position immediately after the defeat.

Buffon characterized his resignation as “an act of responsibility,” elaborating that his decision stemmed from a realization of the urgent need for change following the national team’s disappointment. He emphasized the importance of enabling new leadership to select the right personnel to guide the team forward.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte and former national team chief Roberto Mancini have emerged as leading candidates to succeed Gattuso. Both managers have prior experience in the role, with Mancini notably leading Italy to victory in the European Championship in 2020.

Mancini had also faced his own challenges, overseeing a World Cup qualification failure in 2022 before stepping down to manage a team in Saudi Arabia. The identity of Gattuso’s successor remains uncertain, but it is clear that Italian football is in a state of transition.

As the Azzurri look to reshape their approach and regain their status on the global stage, this pivotal moment serves as a reminder of the cyclical nature of football — how the sport can swiftly turn from glory to crisis, with every aspiration hanging in the balance of a single match.
