Gary Neville faces backlash for calling for violence against Arsenal's Martinelli on live TV

Gary Neville faces backlash over comments on Gabriel Martinelli incident

Arsenal supporters have expressed outrage towards Gary Neville following his remarks during Sky Sports’ coverage of Thursday’s goalless draw against Liverpool at the Emirates. The former Manchester United defender voiced disbelief that Liverpool’s squad did not physically confront Gabriel Martinelli after the Brazilian winger pushed injured Conor Bradley during stoppage time, reports BritPanorama.

Neville’s co-commentary included a pointed critique of Martinelli’s actions, saying, “I am actually fuming with Martinelli. I don’t know how the Liverpool players didn’t go over and absolutely whack him to be honest with you and take a red card. Absolutely disgraceful, that.”

This comment triggered widespread condemnation from Gunners fans on social media platform X, with many expressing their discontent. One prominent Arsenal fan account stated, “Gary Neville is a disgrace by the way, a commentator that was supposed to be neutral calling for Liverpool players to whack Martinelli.” Another supporter added, “You are now seeing the REAL Gary Neville. Not the pundit but him as a human being,” further criticizing his call for violence.

The flashpoint unfolded in added time when Martinelli, attempting to clear Bradley from the pitch, engaged physically with the defender, who was clearly in distress. Liverpool players Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ibrahima Konate quickly intervened to push Martinelli away.

Following the match, Martinelli published an apology on Instagram, acknowledging his actions. “Conor and I have messaged and I’ve already apologised to him,” the winger wrote. “I really didn’t understand he was injured in the heat of the moment. I want to say I’m deeply sorry for reacting. Sending Conor all my best again for a quick recovery.”

Criticism of Martinelli’s conduct was not limited to Neville; former players also weighed in. Roy Keane recalled his own experiences, labeling the behaviour as “an absolute disgrace,” while ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge asserted that players must exhibit awareness when opponents are truly hurt. Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, voiced serious concern over Bradley’s condition, stating, “I am afraid another injury have come up today. Let’s hope for the best but I fear the worst for Conor Bradley.”

Slot defended Martinelli, suggesting that the player would not have acted inappropriately had he fully grasped the severity of Bradley’s injury. He also pointed out that the ongoing issue of time-wasting in football could have contributed to Martinelli’s frustration.

This incident not only highlights the thin line between competitive spirit and sportsmanship but also reminds us that the reactions — both on the pitch and in the commentary box — can reverberate through the sport. What unfolds next will undoubtedly be observed closely by fans and pundits alike.
