Gary Neville cautions Manchester United against repeating managerial cycle with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Gary Neville supports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return to Manchester United

Gary Neville has revealed that he would support Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rumoured return as Manchester United interim manager, but warned the club of going in cycles, reports BritPanorama.

Since the Red Devils parted ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday, Solskjaer has emerged as the leading candidate to take the role on an interim basis, with reports signalling an announcement is expected in the coming days.

The return to Old Trafford for the Norwegian would come over four years since he was sacked in December 2021. Michael Carrick’s name has also been thrown in the mix, giving the United board an alternative short-term option.

Speaking on this dilemma ahead of United’s game against Burnley on Sky Sports, Neville suggested he would be open to the appointment of one of the “old boys,” but warned the move could resemble “Groundhog Day.” When questioned, the former Manchester United defender said: “I wouldn’t not [endorse Solskjaer]. I think there is an element of… we saw this at Liverpool for 25-30 years when they were going through that period where they weren’t winning, and you go through cycles… and United have done this for 12 years now.”

He added, “They put Ryan in charge, then Ole, then you go back to the old boys, then you go for a new one… it’s almost like a cycle, like a movie that we’ve all seen before and Groundhog Day. What I do think is that Ole is someone that absolutely loves the club, he knows the job, he’s been in the job.”

Other names that have been mentioned, such as Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy, were also noted by Neville, who acknowledged their dedication to the club. “They love the club intensely, they get the club,” he said. However, he cautioned that whoever accepts the role will come under significant pressure over the next few months if results do not improve.

Amorim had publicly suggested that his bosses weren’t giving him enough support, with his explosive press conference after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds ultimately the final straw for Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Darren Fletcher took charge in the dugout for last night’s Premier League 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor and is expected to oversee Sunday’s FA Cup match with Brighton.

According to Norwegian publication VG, Solskjaer, who currently lives in Cheshire, is now in talks with United over a contract, and there is a possibility that his Hollywood homecoming could even be sealed by as early as Friday.

As discussions unfold, the shadow of the past hangs over Old Trafford, echoing with the voices of triumph and trials from an era that many fans remember fondly. With Solskjaer back on the horizon, the question remains: can history repeat itself in a different light?
