Gary Lineker suggests Kobbie Mainoo should ‘sue’ former manager
Gary Lineker has jokingly suggested Kobbie Mainoo should ‘sue’ former manager Ruben Amorim following his impressive performance for Manchester United against Tottenham on Saturday, reports BritPanorama.
The Red Devils secured a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes scoring in each half to clinch all three points.
Mainoo, only 20 years old, demonstrated a composed performance in midfield, continuing to impress after a difficult spell under Amorim. Before Michael Carrick’s appointment, he had not even started a Premier League game this season.
Now, however, Mainoo has effectively established himself as a key player in Carrick’s starting XI. In a discussion on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker lightheartedly remarked that Mainoo might consider legal action against Amorim for the limited opportunities he received prior to Carrick taking over.
“Do you know what? If I was Kobbie Mainoo – and I say this in jest – I’d be thinking about whether I should sue him [Amorim] or not,” Lineker quipped.
Lineker highlighted the significant impact Amorim’s tenure had on Mainoo’s development, stating, “He’s taken a year out of that kid’s career. This kid is a wonderful footballer.” He emphasised Mainoo’s ability to control play, receiving the ball under pressure and consistently making the right choices on the field.
As the World Cup approaches, Mainoo is vying for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. He previously shone for the national team at Euro 2024, helping to lead the Three Lions to the final. Given his remarkable performances for United, who have now won four consecutive matches, Lineker believes Mainoo deserves selection for the World Cup.
He further commented, “If he doesn’t make the World Cup squad… and I sense he probably will if he can stay fit and if he keeps playing because he’s just a seriously good footballer.” Lineker also referenced a statement made by Mainoo’s brother, who faced scrutiny for suggesting ‘Free Kobbie,’ advocating for his brother’s recognition.
Mainoo will be looking to maintain his form as Manchester United prepare to face West Ham at the London Stadium on Tuesday. The Hammers will present a challenge, having recently defeated Burnley 2-0.
United, earlier in the season, only managed a 1-1 draw against West Ham, despite Diogo Dalot giving them an early lead before Nuno Espirito Santo’s team equalised late on.
As the landscape of English football shifts with emerging talents, Mainoo’s rise serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of player development and the challenges that managers face in nurturing potential.
