Gary Lineker rebuts Alan Shearer’s theory on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s World Cup omission

Lineker dismisses Shearer’s speculation on Alexander-Arnold’s omission

Gary Lineker has rejected speculation from Alan Shearer that Thomas Tuchel deliberately excluded Trent Alexander-Arnold from England’s World Cup preparations to disrupt a potential clique with Jude Bellingham, reports BritPanorama.

During a discussion on The Rest is Football podcast, the former England striker described Shearer’s theory as “bizarre” and expressed concern about the impact of Alexander-Arnold’s absence on England’s tournament prospects. Lineker stated that the nation’s hopes of lifting the World Cup trophy would be diminished without the defender.

“What I do know is they are two unbelievably talented and brilliant footballers that have delivered over recent seasons,” Lineker said, referring to both Alexander-Arnold and Bellingham.

Despite dismissing the clique explanation, Shearer outlined the theory during the podcast, questioning whether Tuchel might perceive the two players as overly influential together. “Let me chuck this at you, Jude Bellingham and Trent are a pretty powerful couple,” Shearer remarked.

Tuchel’s selection decisions resulted in a significant setback for Alexander-Arnold, who was omitted from an expanded 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Japan and Uruguay. His involvement under Tuchel has been limited, totalling just 26 minutes during a 1-0 victory over Andorra in June.

The defender’s bond with Bellingham, formed during Euro 2024, where they were reportedly “inseparable,” has continued since Alexander-Arnold’s move from Liverpool to Real Madrid. However, he noted that this friendship did not influence his transfer decision.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney elaborated on the situation, suggesting that Alexander-Arnold’s quality warrants a starting position, adding that omitting him from the squad felt significant. “There’s an argument he should be starting, so not having him in the squad, it feels a little bit deeper,” Rooney explained, hinting at potential internal dynamics.

Steven Gerrard, another former England international, provided alternative reasons for Tuchel’s decision, questioning Alexander-Arnold’s playing time and physical condition. “There’s a lot of other circumstances to take into consideration – how much has he played?” he remarked.

As the national team gears up for the World Cup, the focus will be on how these decisions impact team cohesion and performance, highlighting the delicate balance between squad dynamics and individual accomplishments.
