Formula One faces calendar disruption as Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix likely to be cancelled

Upcoming Formula One races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia set for cancellation

The Formula One calendar will undergo a drastic change as this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix are poised to be cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, reports BritPanorama.

This development follows Iranian retaliatory strikes that have targeted both countries, creating significant safety concerns for the high-profile events.

An official announcement regarding the cancellations is expected this weekend. The races were scheduled for April 12 and April 19, and it is unlikely that they will be rescheduled.

The cancellation of these races will create a significant five-week gap in the calendar. The Japan Grand Prix on March 29 will conclude before the series resumes with the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. Sources indicate that the calendar will be reduced to 22 events instead of finding substitutes.

Authorities consulted with security agencies from both nations and with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office before reaching this decision. The deadline for transporting cars and other critical freight to the Gulf is rapidly approaching, as these logistics were expected to begin next week.

The potential cancellations are a major financial blow for the respective organisers, with Bahrain reportedly charging up to £40 million to host their event and Saudi Arabia approximately £60 million annually. Furthermore, officials are preparing contingency plans for races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which complicates the situation as these events are slated for the end of November and early December.

Earlier this week, Lewis Hamilton expressed support for a cautious approach, stating that he trusts F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to make the appropriate decision amid calls for cancellation. “I know that Stefano will do what is right for all of us and the sport,” Hamilton said.

As the motorsport world navigates these complex developments, it serves as a sobering reminder of the intersection between sports and global geopolitics, where the roar of engines often fades against the backdrop of conflict and uncertainty.
