Ferrari’s Frederic Vasseur praises Hamilton’s performance in Australia

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has expressed his satisfaction with Lewis Hamilton’s performance at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, where the British driver secured fourth place behind teammate Charles Leclerc, reports BritPanorama.

The result marks a significant improvement over Hamilton’s challenging 2025 season, during which he failed to reach the podium at any point. Hamilton climbed from seventh on the grid to finish just behind Leclerc, who claimed third place. With this performance, Ferrari left Melbourne with a total of 27 points, achieving a podium finish in the opening round, a stark contrast to last season when they had to wait until the fifth race.

Despite the positive start, Vasseur acknowledged the considerable development work ahead for Ferrari in the coming months. “We know that we have tonnes of things to improve – on the strategy, on the engine, on the chassis, on the tyres, on everything,” Vasseur stated. He highlighted that drivers across the grid are still adapting to the significantly revised machinery for the 2026 season, suggesting that challenges remain for all competitors.

Vasseur reflected on the team’s recovery from a tough qualifying session, where their cars lined up in fourth and seventh positions. “We had a tough Saturday; I think we didn’t put everything together. It’s good to have two cars fighting also at the top,” he said. As the championship heads to Shanghai for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, which features the first Sprint event of the 2026 calendar, the pressure will increase on all teams to further refine their performance.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has acknowledged the rivalry with Ferrari, stating, “We have a fight on our hands with Ferrari.” The competitive tension was clear during the race, with both Leclerc and Hamilton challenging eventual winner George Russell of Mercedes during the early laps. Russell ultimately secured victory, with teammate Kimi Antonelli joining him for a one-two finish.

The championship landscape remains dynamic as teams continue to adjust to the new regulations and refine their strategies. Hamilton’s experience and adaptability within Ferrari colours could prove pivotal as the season unfolds, especially with the changes in machinery that all teams must navigate.

The complexities of racing under the new rules have added an extra layer of intrigue to the unfolding season, as teams and drivers work to optimise their performance amidst shifting competitive dynamics. The forthcoming challenges in Shanghai promise to deepen the sense of anticipation surrounding this year’s championship.

It is a reminder that even in sport’s highest echelons, the quest for improvement is unending. With the fire of competition igniting the next round, fans can expect both drama and determination, underscoring how quickly fortunes can shift in Formula 1.
