Ferrari eyeing McLaren duo as future driver prospects

Ferrari’s team principal Fred Vasseur is understood to be closely observing the driver landscape at McLaren, with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri emerging as prospective candidates to fill future vacancies at the Scuderia, reports BritPanorama.

The talented British-Australian pairing currently racing for Zak Brown’s outfit are being considered as potential long-term replacements for either Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc. The Italian marque appears to be planning ahead for the 2027 season, despite both McLaren drivers remaining under extended contractual agreements with their current employer.

Vasseur’s interest signals Ferrari’s determination to secure elite talent as the sport enters a new regulatory era. The futures of both Hamilton and Leclerc remain subject to considerable scrutiny as Formula One prepares for its first campaign under revised technical regulations next year.

For the seven-time world champion, speculation regarding retirement has dominated discussion among commentators, though it is believed contractual provisions exist that could see him remain at Maranello through 2027. Leclerc’s situation presents different considerations entirely, as the Monegasque driver is reportedly open to a potential switch to Mercedes.

Perhaps most tellingly, the 27-year-old described the forthcoming 2026 season as “now or never” for his Ferrari team, a statement that has raised eyebrows within the paddock. Piastri’s circumstances may prove particularly fluid, with reports suggesting the Australian’s position could shift following his failure to secure the 2025 Drivers’ Championship ahead of teammate Norris.

British rising star Oliver Bearman features prominently in discussions, while Vasseur has also turned his attention to Rafael Camara. The Brazilian youngster will compete with Invicta Racing as he attempts to follow in the footsteps of recent consecutive F3 and F2 champions Gabriel Bortoleto and Leonardo Fornaroli.

Bearman has already established himself as a future star during his maiden full campaign in the sport. The Essex racer scored points on his Ferrari debut at Jeddah in 2024 and delivered a solid season with Haas, securing the American team’s finest-ever result with fourth place in Mexico City. With his contract expiring at the conclusion of 2026, the 20-year-old believes he is prepared for elevation to the Scuderia.

“Well, you know, I’m in F1, and you have to back yourself,” he stated. “So yes, I believe I’m ready, but I have to continue to prove that.”
