FC Basel postpones match against FC Thun due to fire at St. Jakob-Park

A fire that broke out in the basement of St. Jakob-Park on Friday evening has forced FC Basel to postpone their Swiss Super League fixture against FC Thun, originally scheduled for Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The blaze affected the first-team dressing room area at Switzerland’s largest football ground, damaging essential matchday equipment and rendering the team unable to fulfil the away fixture.

In a statement, Basel confirmed the impacted zone had been cordoned off following the incident, stating: “Due to the damage incurred… and the lack of usable match and medical equipment, FC Basel is unable to play the away match against FC Thun on Saturday.”

The Swiss Football League has endorsed the postponement, and a new date for the match has yet to be announced. The incident destroyed players’ kits, boots, and crucial medical and technical gear necessary for match operations, with the fire also affecting coaching staff offices, physiotherapy rooms, and shower areas.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigations regarding the cause of the fire remain ongoing, and authorities noted that smoke extraction measures were essential once the blaze was contained.

The implications of this fixture are significant, with Basel currently in fourth place in the Swiss Super League, while Thun sits atop the table with a substantial advantage. As the league works on rescheduling, Basel faces the challenge of replacing damaged equipment and restoring their facilities with the aim to return to competitive action promptly.

This event serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of preparations in sports, where an unexpected incident can swiftly disrupt the plans of even the most established clubs.
