Fan dies at Azteca Stadium during friendly match
A football fan has died at Mexico’s renowned Azteca Stadium, now known as Estadio Banorte, after plummeting from the VIP seating area shortly before last night’s friendly fixture against Portugal, reports BritPanorama.
The venue had just reopened following major refurbishment work when the tragedy unfolded. Security personnel indicated that the man was under the influence of alcohol when he attempted to jump from the upper tier of executive boxes down to the level below.
During this attempt, he lost his footing and fell to the ground floor. A statement posted on social media by the Mexico City Public Prosecutor’s Office (Fiscalía CDMX) expressed deep regret over the incident and confirmed that investigators attended the scene to commence necessary inquiries.
The statement noted: “From the outset, officials from the Attorney General’s Office, forensic experts and officers from the Investigative Police attended the scene to commence the necessary investigations. The area was cordoned off, the scene was secured, and evidence was collected by experts specializing in criminalistics, photography and forensic medicine.” Furthermore, CCTV footage and statements from witnesses are being analyzed to reconstruct the incident.
Authorities confirmed that the statutory post-mortem procedures are underway to establish the cause of death and the individual’s condition prior to the fall. The prosecutor’s office will continue to investigate and keep the public informed of relevant developments.
Azteca Stadium holds particular historical significance as it is set to become the first ground to host matches across three World Cup tournaments, having previously hosted events in 1970 and 1986. While the friendly match proceeded as scheduled, concluding in a goalless draw, the incident casts a shadow.
Despite the fatal event, the atmosphere remained charged as fans flocked to see their teams play. Portugal were missing Cristiano Ronaldo due to injury but still posed several threats, notably when João Félix’s efforts tested the Mexican defense, and Gonçalo Ramos struck the post.
As tensions simmered on the pitch, Mexico, who faced criticism from parts of their support, prepare for their next friendly match against Belgium on Tuesday, while Portugal will meet the United States on the same day. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between celebration and tragedy that often overshadows the sporting world.
