Fabian Schar returns to Newcastle after harrowing experience in Iran
Newcastle defender Fabian Schar has returned safely to Tyneside after describing some of the most frightening days of his life during Iran’s missile and drone strikes against Gulf States, which were a response to actions by the US and Israel, reports BritPanorama.
The 34-year-old Swiss international initially travelled to the region last week with the club’s approval to continue his recovery from a serious ankle injury sustained in January. However, what was meant to be a rehabilitation trip quickly turned traumatic as military conflict escalated around him.
Upon returning, Schar took to Instagram to share his ordeal. “I’ve just had a few of my most terrifying days having unfortunately witnessed first-hand what’s happening in the Middle East,” he wrote. “I was there as part of my rehabilitation programme, and I’m glad I found a way to get home safely.” He noted the frightening conditions he faced during his time there, expressing hope for those affected by the ongoing crisis.
The attacks resulted in significant travel disruption, grounding over 3,400 flights across the region. Both Dubai and Doha airports were completely shut down, stranding British holidaymakers and other travellers in the region until flight services began resuming gradually.
Schar was fortunate to secure passage back to the UK as services were restored. However, his return raises further questions about his future at St James’ Park, with his contract set to expire in June, allowing him to negotiate with other clubs, including several Bundesliga sides reportedly interested in him.
As he continues to recover from injury, Schar’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable interplay between sport and global events, illuminating the precarious situations athletes can find themselves in, even during what should be a simple recovery period.
