Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa confronts fans after Wolves defeat
Aston Villa skipper Ezri Konsa required intervention from fellow players and coaching staff after attempting to confront the club’s own travelling supporters when Friday evening’s match with Wolves concluded, reports BritPanorama.
The 28-year-old defender was observed in an angry exchange with Villa fans at the final whistle, with teammates stepping in to pull him away from the situation. Tensions had already been running high throughout the contest, with Konsa involved in a heated incident with Wolves defender Toti Gomes during the game.
Villa suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to their West Midlands rivals at Molineux Stadium, marking another setback in what has become an inconsistent campaign for Unai Emery’s squad. Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes were on target for the hosts, securing three points that spared Wolves from finishing with the Premier League’s worst-ever points haul.
The defeat extends Villa’s miserable run at Molineux, where they have failed to claim victory since 2020. This loss places significant pressure on their Champions League ambitions, putting the club’s grip on a top-four berth in jeopardy. Should Manchester United secure victory in their outstanding fixture against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Villa would slip to fourth position.
Following the match, Villa’s director of football operations Damian Vidagany took to social media to address the supporters’ discontent. He described the atmosphere in the changing room as “very sad,” before manager Emery rallied the group. “The fans you have the right to feel whatever as football belongs to you,” Vidagany wrote, emphasising the need for balance during difficult periods.
Emery, who appeared composed when addressing journalists after the match, reflected on the dramatic swings his side has experienced this season. “In September I was worried about being in the relegation zone,” he noted. The manager issued a direct appeal to Villa Park faithful as the battle for European qualification intensifies: “We are having a great season and I want to tell our fans now that we need them. We need to be together—players, coaches, fans, everyone.”
As the season unfolds, the balance between ambition and realism remains fragile for Villa, reminding supporters how swiftly the tides of fortune can turn in football.
