In the post-match press conference, Maresca did not shy away from critiquing his players. “I think we were in general, we were not good enough,” he stated. “When you are not good enough in the Premier League, the consequence can be a bad one.”
The team has now dropped eight points from winning positions this season. Maresca emphasised the importance of consistency if Chelsea is to challenge for the Premier League title: “If you want to be there, you need consistency. Today when we lost points, we didn’t show that.”
Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah also reflected on the match, suggesting that Sunderland’s approach disrupted Chelsea’s game plan. “Difficult one, they came to disrupt our game,” he noted.
