England named as potential World Cup contenders by former Spain defender Nacho Monreal

England tipped for World Cup glory by former Spanish defender

England has been identified as a strong contender for the upcoming World Cup as former Spain defender Nacho Monreal shared his thoughts on the tournament’s potential winners, reports BritPanorama.

While Monreal acknowledges the Three Lions as serious challengers, he emphasised that Spain remains “probably the favourites” to claim the title. The former Premier League star highlighted Spain’s recent performance as indicative of their winning potential.

Current analyses place Spain among the frontrunners, bolstered by a team blending emerging talent with seasoned international experience. Their tactical structure and consistent performances showcase their readiness for a successful tournament run.

In exclusive comments to the media, Monreal stated: “I think Spain is doing so good recently. They won the last Euros. They qualified for the next World Cup. They are in a good moment. If you see them, they have a typical Spanish play, pass to pass, and they control the games. They are really good, in my opinion. Right now, they are probably the favourites to win the World Cup.”

Despite his praise for Spain, Monreal also sees England as one of four nations with significant chances to secure the trophy. He mentioned France, Brazil, and Argentina as additional contenders, noting, “It’s not going to be easy, you know, because there are always four or five top, top national teams. All of them have really good chances to win it.”

The former defender underscored the need for excellence to win the World Cup: “If you want to win the World Cup, you need to be the best and you need to beat any single national team.” England’s case for championship status is strengthened by a core group of players reaching their prime, paired with recent tournament successes that reflect their growth as a team.

However, sustainability throughout the tournament will be crucial for England. They must convert potentially promising performances into definitive victories to achieve their goal.

Looking ahead, the group stage draw is set for Friday at 5 PM, introducing a new 48-team format. This will involve teams placed into four pots based on FIFA rankings and host-nation status, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico having their spots in Pot 1 alongside the nine highest-ranked teams. The draw will also implement a “tennis-style” bracket, enabling top teams like France, Argentina, Spain, and England to avoid meeting until the latter stages of the tournament, adding layers of intrigue to the competitive landscape.

With 42 of the 48 spots already confirmed, the remaining six positions will be determined in playoff matches in March 2026. The imminent draw will provide further clarity on the tournament structure as FIFA prepares to release the complete match schedule following the event.

As the anticipation builds, the impending competition encapsulates not just the pursuit of glory but also the delicate balance of skill, strategy, and the unwavering hope of nations aspiring for the ultimate triumph on football’s biggest stage.
