Ollie Lawrence ruled out of Six Nations clash against Italy

England centre Ollie Lawrence has been ruled out of Saturday’s Six Nations encounter against Italy in Rome due to a persistent knee problem, reports BritPanorama.

The Bath midfielder will undergo rehabilitation at his club rather than travel with the squad to the Stadio Olimpico. His absence represents a significant setback for head coach Steve Borthwick, given that Lawrence only returned to international duty seven days ago during the 42-21 defeat to Ireland at Twickenham.

The 26-year-old was not included in the 36-man party announced for the team’s penultimate fixture of the championship. Tommy Freeman emerges as the frontrunner to fill the vacancy at outside centre, potentially moving infield from his usual wing position. Henry Slade of Exeter Chiefs also presents an alternative selection for Borthwick.

Lawrence’s knee complaint has plagued his entire Six Nations campaign, forcing him to sit out the opening three rounds of the tournament. While his return against Ireland marked his first appearance of the championship, it proved short-lived. Last week, he received an injection in the affected joint, but this treatment has not enabled him to recover sufficiently to participate in the upcoming match.

Borthwick’s side currently sits fourth in the Six Nations standings, with two matches remaining. England began their campaign with a victory over Wales but has since faced consecutive defeats to Scotland and Ireland. The team shares five points with Italy, who have experienced a mixture of results, including a notable victory against Scotland.

Compounding Borthwick’s challenges, scrum-half Alex Mitchell is confirmed out for the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Ireland match, leaving the field after just 24 minutes.

As England prepares for the crucial fixture in Rome, the team faces not only the absence of Lawrence but also fundamental adjustments in strategy and squad dynamics. It’s a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport, where injuries can swiftly alter the course of a championship campaign.
