England cricketers take a breather on Sunshine Coast
Following their eight-wicket defeat to Australia at The Gabba, England’s cricket team has been spotted enjoying some relaxation on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, reports BritPanorama.
The players arrived at the popular resort destination on Tuesday, with captain Ben Stokes and several teammates seen basking in the sun on Noosa Main Beach. Head coach Brendon McCullum drove a number of players to the area, where they indulged in sushi before settling down for drinks along the beachfront.
Stokes, dressed in board shorts, was seen mingling with fans and taking photos, while opening batsman Zak Crawley joined fast bowlers Brydon Carse and Will Jacks for drinks as the squad aimed to recuperate after falling 2-0 behind in the Ashes series.
This Noosa trip had been planned prior to the team’s arrival in Australia, as McCullum had already indicated that the squad would take a break from practice this week. His rationale, however, has raised some eyebrows.
“I actually felt like we over-prepared to be honest,” McCullum noted after the loss in Brisbane. He elaborated that extensive training sessions left his players mentally exhausted rather than match-ready.
Some analysts have expressed confusion regarding England’s training schedule. Former captain Nasser Hussain voiced his concerns, questioning why the team would begin the Adelaide Test without playing any warm-up fixtures against Australian opposition. Similarly, David Lloyd critiqued the trip to Noosa, highlighting potential negative consequences from such downtime.
Adding to England’s troubles, Mark Wood has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes due to a knee injury, further diminishing the team’s chances of a comeback. The tourists now face a significant challenge, with historical precedent indicating that only Don Bradman’s 1936-37 side managed to turn around a 2-0 deficit in an Ashes series.
England is set to resume training ahead of the third Test at Adelaide Oval on 17 December, where the pressure to perform will be immense. Amid the sun-soaked beach days, the gravity of their predicament looms, serving as a reminder that in sport, moments of levity can swiftly give way to the harsh reality of competition.
