Emma Raducanu heads to Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca
Emma Raducanu is set to return to Romania for the upcoming Transylvania Open, a tournament of considerable significance for her, reports BritPanorama.
The British number one has included the WTA 250 event in her schedule, marking her first appearance at this competition since 2021. This represents a kind of homecoming for the 2021 US Open champion, whose father Ion is originally from Bucharest.
Fluently speaking Romanian, Raducanu is expected to feel comfortable as the indoor hard-court tournament commences at the end of January. This will be her first match in Cluj since her 2021 performance, following which she experienced a challenging start to her 2026 season.
During her recent participation at the United Cup in Perth, Raducanu had to withdraw from her opening match against Naomi Osaka due to injury and subsequently lost to Maria Sakkari, eliminating Great Britain from the competition. Furthermore, it was revealed that the world number 29 had been dealing with light bone bruising in her right foot over the off-season.
Despite these setbacks, Raducanu has a promising chance awaiting her in Romania, as she is expected to be the top seed at the Transylvania Open. This presents her with a genuine opportunity to capture her second career title.
With the draw looking favourable, she faces competition primarily from Romanian players Jacqueline Cristian and Sorana Cirstea, who are ranked 38th and 41st respectively. Defending champion Anastasia Potapova, currently ranked 55th, will also compete.
The tournament, running from January 31 to February 7, coincides with the Australian Open women’s singles final, and by opting for Cluj, Raducanu has chosen to forgo the Abu Dhabi Open, a WTA 500 event she has played in previously.
Raducanu’s last visit to Transylvania was memorable, as she secured her first WTA main draw match victory there, defeating Polona Hercog and Ana Bogdan before being knocked out by Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-finals. This tournament serves as a significant moment in her career, a reminder of her potential as she seeks to regain her form.
As Raducanu prepares for this pivotal tournament, it will be intriguing to see if she can find the spark that lit up the tennis world in her past triumphs, proving once more that potential can often materialise from familiar ground.
