Emma Raducanu battles post-viral symptoms as she aims for Madrid Open comeback

Emma Raducanu continues to battle illness

Emma Raducanu’s frustrating absence from the tennis tour continues, with the British No. 1 still battling the after-effects of a virus she picked up back in February, reports BritPanorama.

It has been nearly a month since Raducanu last appeared on court, where she suffered a heavy defeat to Amanda Anisimova at Indian Wells, managing just two games in a match lasting under an hour.

Since that match, the 23-year-old has withdrawn from both the Miami Open and the WTA 500 event in Linz. Currently ranked No. 28 in the world, she is still experiencing persistent post-viral symptoms, and it is understood she is determined to return to full health before competing again.

Looking back, Raducanu acknowledged that she may have pushed herself too hard while feeling unwell. She first fell ill during the Transylvania Open in February, where, despite reaching the final, she appeared off her game in a 6-0 6-2 loss to Sorana Cirstea. Just two days later, she was competing again in Doha, but retired at the start of the third set against Camila Osorio after having her vitals checked.

She continued to experience health issues in Dubai, where a cough and chest discomfort hindered her performance. By the time she arrived in California for Indian Wells, Raducanu reflected on her decision to participate in the Middle Eastern tournaments, stating, “In hindsight, I think the Middle East was too much of a push. I wasn’t feeling good health-wise and kind of made myself stay out there, but I probably wouldn’t do the same again.”

Raducanu is now setting her sights on the Madrid Open, scheduled to begin on 21 April, where, as a seeded player, she would receive a bye into the second round, likely positioning her first match around 23 or 24 April. The upcoming switch to clay surfaces further underlines her cautious approach, as she aims to ensure full fitness before tackling the challenges that lie ahead. Her current ranking secures her spots in the main draws at both the Italian Open and the French Open.

For her fans, England’s hopes rest on the grass at the Queen’s Club WTA 500 event starting on 8 June, where she has already confirmed her entry. In a sport where every moment counts, Raducanu’s gradual return brings with it anticipation not just for her performance, but also a reminder of the delicate balance athletes must maintain between health and competition.
