Egypt’s FA calls for cancellation of LGBT celebrations at World Cup match
The Egyptian Football Association has urged FIFA to cancel LGBT celebrations scheduled for the 2026 World Cup fixture between Egypt and Iran to “maintain the spirit of unity and peace,” reports BritPanorama.
The themed event, referred to as the “Pride Match,” is set to take place on June 26, coinciding with Pride Month. This would be the first occasion of such a celebration at a FIFA World Cup.
The Egyptian FA contends that the event could “provoke cultural and religious sensitivities,” especially considering both nations uphold anti-gay laws; in Iran, same-sex relationships can be punished by death while homosexuality is heavily stigmatised in Egypt.
In a letter to FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom, the Egyptian FA expressed its “absolute” rejection of any LGBT-related activities during the match. It stated, “to maintain the spirit of unity and peace, it is necessary to avoid including activities that could provoke cultural and religious sensitivities between fans present from both countries.”
The Egyptian FA emphasized FIFA’s principle of respecting cultural beliefs and requested the match be focused solely on sport to foster an atmosphere of respect. The federation categorically rejects any performances supporting homosexuality on match day.
Despite these requests, the local organizing committee in Seattle intends to proceed with the planned celebrations. Eric Wahl, a member of the Seattle Pride Match Advisory Committee, remarked, “The Egypt v Iran match in Seattle in June just happens to be the Pride Match, and I think that is a good thing, actually.” He expressed the view that Seattle offers a welcoming environment for all.
The celebrations are scheduled two days prior to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots on June 28, which are considered a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Lumen Field, hosting six matches during the World Cup, presents potential for adjustments to the planned events.
