Edgbaston Stadium undergoes £46 million redevelopment
Edgbaston Stadium is undergoing a substantial £46 million transformation that will fundamentally reshape one of English cricket’s most celebrated venues, reports BritPanorama.
Warwickshire County Cricket Club has commenced work on an ambitious redevelopment scheme, with the Raglan and Priory Stands already demolished to clear the site. In their place will rise a striking new 3,200-seat stand incorporating a four-star Radisson RED hotel.
Construction firm Sisk has been appointed to deliver the project, part of the club’s broader masterplan for the Birmingham ground. The development aims to reimagine the stadium’s future while preserving its status as a premier sporting destination.
The hotel will offer guests an experience unique to Birmingham, featuring stylish accommodation with rooms overlooking the pitch itself. Visitors can expect contemporary social spaces alongside a bar and restaurant within the four-star establishment.
Enhanced hospitality boxes and upgraded facilities for spectators will complement the new stand’s design. Concept images reveal a sleek black hotel frontage with the stadium’s floodlights visible above.
The club anticipates completing construction ahead of England’s Men’s Ashes series in summer 2027. Once finished, the venue will blend matchday atmosphere with year-round business travel and leisure hospitality, offering rooftop views across one of Britain’s most historic sporting grounds.
The redevelopment is projected to elevate Edgbaston’s contribution to the local economy beyond £40 million annually. During major international tournaments, this figure could surge to approximately £70 million, particularly in World Cup years.
The project will generate 134 permanent positions for residents in the surrounding community. Warwickshire County Cricket Club has emphasised that the scheme will transform the stadium into an energetic social and tourism hub welcoming visitors throughout the calendar year.
The economic benefits extend beyond mere hospitality, with the venue positioned to drive Birmingham’s broader regeneration as a destination for sport, culture and modern entertainment. Stuart Cain, the club’s chief executive, stated: “The next stage of our masterplan project will help cement our city as a world-class sporting and tourism hub.”
The club is currently recruiting a general manager to lead the hotel from its inaugural chapter, describing the position as a rare opportunity to shape the establishment’s culture and identity. Cricket continues at Edgbaston throughout the construction period, with Division One Warwickshire hosting Surrey next Friday to open their county season.
England Women will face Sri Lanka at the ground in June, followed by a Men’s ODI against India in July. Additionally, Pakistan will visit for a Test match in September. This redevelopment not only signals an invigorating phase for Edgbaston but also underscores the enduring legacy of sports infrastructure in nurturing local economies and communities.
