Chelsea and Scotland football legend Eddie McCreadie dies at 85

Former Chelsea and Scotland defender Eddie McCreadie has died at the age of 85, reports BritPanorama.

McCreadie, who spent 11 years at Chelsea from 1962 to 1973, made a significant impact both as a player and manager. He earned 23 caps for Scotland during his international career between 1965 and 1969, famously participating in the 3-2 victory over England at Wembley in 1967, which led the Scots to proclaim themselves as the new world champions after England’s World Cup win the previous year.

Throughout his time at Chelsea, McCreadie made 410 appearances and was instrumental in the team’s success, helping the club to win the FA Cup in 1970. One of his memorable moments came in that final, where he notably kicked Leeds captain Billy Bremner in the head. Despite scoring only five goals for Chelsea, McCreadie’s solid defensive skills established him as a key player alongside notable teammates like Bobby Tambling and Peter Osgood.

McCreadie’s contributions extended beyond his playing days; he briefly managed Chelsea in 1975, taking on the challenge of rebuilding a struggling team. Facing financial constraints, he successfully promoted the club back to the First Division before resigning after a disagreement over a company car request.

Chelsea expressed deep sadness over McCreadie’s passing, describing him as “one of the great figures in our history.” The club’s tribute acknowledged his toughness, innovation, and moments of brilliance, including a stunning goal in the 1965 League Cup final, where he famously dribbled 80 yards to score. Fans also took to social media to share their condolences, highlighting his legacy as both a player and manager.

McCreadie’s impact on the game transcends mere statistics; he is remembered as a defender who played a crucial role in some of Chelsea’s defining moments. Such reflections on his career remind us how sport intertwines with personal stories, shaping the narratives we cherish in football history.
