Newcastle United manager reassures Sandro Tonali amid transfer speculation
Eddie Howe spoke directly with Sandro Tonali on Monday as speculation swirled around the Italian midfielder’s future at Newcastle United, reports BritPanorama.
The conversation followed reports claiming that the 25-year-old had been “offered” to Arsenal during the closing moments of the winter transfer window. However, the Magpies have privately maintained that no discussions occurred with the Premier League leaders concerning their midfield star.
Newcastle’s swift response aimed to address the situation, with Howe personally seeking to reassure Tonali amidst the transfer noise. The club appears determined to quell any suggestion that the Italy international could be available for a move away from Tyneside.
This stance reflects Newcastle’s experience from the previous summer, where they fought to retain Alexander Isak before eventually agreeing to Liverpool’s £130million approach for the Swedish striker. The club has no intention of encountering a similar scenario with Tonali, who remains under contract at St James’ Park until 2029, with an additional year option providing considerable security.
Howe commented on the situation, stating: “I don’t think so, but lots of things happen without my knowledge. As far as I’m aware, we’ve got a player that’s an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person. He’s very happy here, he’s got a great relationship with me and his teammates.” He emphasized that Tonali’s focus remained on contributing to the team’s success.
The speculation surrounding Tonali, who is recovering from a 10-month ban for betting offences incurred shortly after his £55million arrival from AC Milan in July 2023, prompted Howe to seek clarification with the player. Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City, Howe stated, “Sandro’s absolutely fine. I had discussions with Sandro yesterday. His only focus… was Manchester City and trying to win that game.”
While Joelinton is confirmed to be out of action, Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley are also likely to miss the game, leaving Tonali to take a central role in Newcastle’s midfield as they attempt to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit. Howe remains confident in the capability of his squad, saying, “We still believe we’ve got the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals.” With an important match on the horizon, there’s a palpable sense of confidence amid the noise.
