Newcastle’s defeat to Sunderland prompts Howe’s apology
Eddie Howe has apologised to Newcastle fans following their nightmare 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.
The Toon struggled against their fierce rivals, who secured all three points following an own goal from Nick Woltemade shortly after half-time. This loss leaves Newcastle sitting 12th in the Premier League table after 16 matches, while Sunderland occupies seventh after a commendable start to the season.
Howe fronted up following the fixture, expressing regret over the team’s performance. “That will swing for a long time,” he admitted. “We know our performance was off what we needed to be.”
Though defending well, Howe noted, “We weren’t good enough to open them up. I am disappointed for the supporters and sorry for our performance, for a lack of goalmouth action and clinical attacking.”
Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes labelled the display ’embarrassing’, asserting that the team did not play like the better side against Sunderland. “I’m very angry. I’m so embarrassed. I’m so frustrated,” he stated. “There was no crossing, no passing and no shooting. No nothing. It was a mess, in my opinion.”
He added, “We only have one way we can go from here, and that’s winning in a few days against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.” Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris expressed delight at his team’s performance, stating, “I’m proud and happy. The win is well deserved. The lads were incredible.” The victory underscores Sunderland’s impressive trajectory this season and raises questions about Newcastle’s consistency as they aim to recover swiftly from this setback.
