Anthony Joshua’s future in boxing uncertain after tragic car accident
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn believes Anthony Joshua will eventually wish to return to boxing, although he recognizes that substantial time is necessary before any decision can be made, reports BritPanorama.
The 36-year-old former world champion was involved in a serious car crash in Nigeria on December 29, resulting in the deaths of two close friends and leaving Joshua himself with injuries. The incident occurred while he was holidaying after defeating YouTuber Jake Paul in a sixth-round knockout in Miami on December 19.
In a statement, Hearn expressed that Joshua will require time to recover both physically and emotionally before contemplating his future in the sport. “He will need his time physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, before he makes a decision on his future,” Hearn said.
Those who perished in the accident, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were described as dedicated members of Joshua’s team. The boxer, who has Nigerian heritage but was raised in Watford, was mourning while trying to process the tragedy.
Despite speculations surrounding Joshua’s potential return to the ring, Hearn maintains that such thoughts are not on Joshua’s mind at the moment. The focus, he insists, should be on allowing the boxer space to grieve for his friends. “This is very different to that and I know he will take his time,” he stated.
Hearn stressed that discussions about Joshua’s boxing career are not intended to take place anytime soon. “It is certainly not a conversation I’ll be having with him any time soon,” he explained, adding, “The only conversation is ‘are you OK?'” He acknowledged that people sometimes put on a brave face even when they are not alright, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Before the incident, interest was mounting for a highly anticipated bout with Tyson Fury, following Joshua’s strong performance against Paul. However, Hearn predicts that it will be quite some time before Joshua considers competing again, as the focus remains on providing support during this challenging period.
Ultimately, Hearn reassured that Joshua’s voice will be the one to share when he is ready to make decisions regarding the future. “When the time is right, I believe he will make his decision and you will hear it from him,” Hearn concluded.
In the sport of boxing, the line between triumph and tragedy can be razor-thin; as Joshua navigates this profound loss, all eyes will be on how he reconciles his passion for the ring with the enduring memory of friends lost.
