Keane’s remarks about Carrick’s wife prompt backlash
Eamon Dunphy has launched a scathing attack on Roy Keane following the pundit’s remarks about Michael Carrick’s wife, reports BritPanorama.
Keane made these controversial comments while discussing Carrick’s appointment as Manchester United’s interim head coach on the Stick to Football podcast. The Cork native referenced a dispute between himself and Carrick from over a decade ago, remarking, “Well his wife can always come in, because she’s got a bit of a big mouth sometimes.” He added, “She’s probably doing the team talk.”
The remarks have drawn significant backlash since they aired, with many critics highlighting the inappropriateness of discussing a woman in such a context. Writing in the Irish Mirror, Dunphy declared that Keane had overstepped the mark. He expressed disdain, saying, “Keane is becoming an embarrassment to football, to himself, and perhaps to Ireland… It is not right ever to attack a woman in a high-profile situation like this. It is cheap. It is lazy. And it is wrong.”
Dunphy expressed deep disappointment at Keane’s conduct, stating he felt ashamed on behalf of football and Ireland. He sympathized with Carrick, noting, “I feel for [Michael] Carrick. He has taken on a big job at Old Trafford. He is trying to rebuild something meaningful.”
He contrasted Carrick’s serious work with what he views as Keane’s declining standards, stating, “Keane, meanwhile, is doing adverts where he insults people for money, becoming a parody of the figure he once was.” While Dunphy and Keane once shared a positive relationship, the veteran broadcaster has become increasingly critical of the former Ireland midfielder in recent years.
Sky Sports had hoped to bring the two former teammates together on camera prior to last weekend’s Manchester derby. However, Manchester United declined the request for an interview featuring both Keane and Carrick. Whether the two will have an opportunity to address their differences in the future remains uncertain.
As Carrick embarks on the challenge of stabilizing Manchester United, he is likely to keep the focus on his task at hand. The Englishman is expected to continue in the dugout through to the season’s conclusion, with the club’s next fixture against Arsenal on Sunday at 4:30pm.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of how the world of football is often one where personal battles are played out in public, blurring the lines between rivalry and respect.
