Driver in Anthony Joshua crash appears in court

The driver involved in the fatal crash with boxing star Anthony Joshua appeared before a Nigerian court this Wednesday, reports BritPanorama.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faced multiple charges in Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State related to the incident that occurred on 29th December.

He has been accused of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, operating a vehicle without due care, and driving without a valid licence. Prosecutors indicated that additional time is needed to compile their evidence file, and the hearing was brief, with the case postponed until 13th March.

During the tragic event, Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami, both aged 36, lost their lives when the Lexus SUV carrying them collided with a stationary lorry on the heavily trafficked Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua himself sustained injuries but survived the crash and received hospital treatment before being discharged on New Year’s Eve.

Authorities revealed that the SUV was reportedly traveling at a high speed prior to the collision. Kayode was initially granted bail set at approximately £2,600 during his first court appearance on 20th January, where he did not enter a plea.

As investigations continue, Kayode’s case raises critical questions about road safety and accountability in Nigeria. Joshua has expressed profound grief over the loss of his close associates, stating, “I’ve lost people before, but I don’t think I’ve lost people like that, my left and my right.” The former champion has had both men’s names tattooed on his arm as a tribute.

The court will review all gathered materials during the next hearing in March, determining subsequent legal steps in a case that carries significant implications. For Joshua, it represents a painful chapter, blending the world of sport with life’s unpredictable tragedies — a reminder of how fleeting moments can reshape futures.
