Diplomatic dispute arises as Bosnian media accuse Italian soldier of filming training session

Diplomatic row escalates ahead of World Cup play-off final

A diplomatic row has erupted ahead of tonight’s crucial World Cup play-off final between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy after an Italian soldier serving with the European Union Force Bosnia and Herzegovina was accused of filming the hosts’ training session, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Bosnian squad’s training base in Butmir, where the man was seen recording players with his mobile phone.

Bosnia’s football federation has subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the European Union peacekeeping mission stationed in the country. The controversy comes just hours before the two nations meet at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, with a place at the 2026 World Cup in North America at stake.

The soldier, dressed in military camouflage with an Italian patch visible on his shoulder, initially appeared harmless before retrieving his smartphone and beginning to record. While the opening quarter of an hour was accessible to journalists and the public, staff noticed the man continued filming well beyond this permitted window. Security personnel from the Bosnian Federation swiftly escorted him from the premises after realising he had remained in position.

The training facility at FK Sarajevo’s Butmir complex sits directly adjacent to NATO headquarters, which houses the Multinational Battalion and military police units, including Italian Carabinieri. Unlike more established national teams, Bosnia’s training ground lacks adequate screening, such as canvas barriers or panels to shield sessions from outside observation.

Defence sources have firmly rejected suggestions that the soldier was engaged in espionage on behalf of Gennaro Gattuso’s coaching staff. According to these sources, the man was stationed at the neighbouring EUFOR base and had simply been observing the training session as a spectator, with no links whatsoever to the Italian national team setup.

An image of the figure perched on steps near the Bosnian stadium, wearing a camouflage jacket behind a small metal fence, has since spread rapidly across the country’s social media. However, no evidence has emerged linking the individual to Italy’s backroom team. “It’s absolutely true,” Endin Causevic, a journalist for SportSport, confirmed to Marca regarding the incident, though the outlet SportMediaset reported he was merely a fan watching proceedings.

The match carries enormous significance for both nations, with Italy seeking their first World Cup appearance since 2014 after failing to qualify for the previous two tournaments. Bosnia secured their place in the final through a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Wales in Cardiff last week. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko has suggested the pressure lies firmly with the four-time world champions.

The 40-year-old said after the semi-final triumph: “I don’t know why Italy preferred not to play in Wales; we went there without fear and won. If they’re afraid to play in Wales, something isn’t right. After failing to qualify for the last two World Cups, they’re now playing for a lot.”

As the atmosphere intensifies on the eve of the match, the tension extends beyond the pitch. This incident could serve as a stark reminder of the thin line between sport and politics, especially in a landscape where every detail matters. Both teams have much more than just a trophy on the line; the stakes reflect the aspirations and frustrations of their nations.
