Diogo Jota's sons to be mascots in emotional Liverpool vs Wolves match this weekend

Emotional significance in Liverpool-Wolverhampton fixture

Saturday’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield will carry deep emotional significance as Diogo Jota’s two sons walk onto the pitch alongside the matchday mascots, reports BritPanorama.

Dinis and Duarte, two of the late Portuguese forward’s three children, will participate in the pre-match proceedings for what promises to be a poignant occasion. This marks the first time these two clubs have faced each other since Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in northwestern Spain back in July.

The 28-year-old, who represented both sides during his career, died alongside his younger brother Andre Silva when their vehicle crashed in the Zamora province. Jota’s journey to Anfield began at Molineux, where he arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2017 and made a profound impact.

His performances there led to a permanent transfer, helping Wolves secure promotion to the Premier League the following year. Over three seasons at the club, he scored 44 goals in 131 appearances, which caught the attention of Jurgen Klopp, prompting his move to Liverpool in 2020 on a five-year deal.

Jota’s tenure at Liverpool was successful, culminating in helping the Reds lift the Premier League trophy earlier this year. Ahead of Liverpool’s final home match of 2025, manager Arne Slot reflected on the rollercoaster of emotions over the past year and expressed sympathy towards Jota’s family, saying, “Doing so leads me to think especially of the family of Diogo Jota on what will be their first Christmas without him.”

The club has taken steps to honour Jota’s legacy, permanently retiring his number 20 shirt across all teams and ensuring his family is supported on the financial front during this trying time. Liverpool’s owners have committed to upholding the remainder of Jota’s contract, reportedly worth around £140,000 weekly, to support his widow Rute Cardoso and their three children.

Supporters have kept Jota’s memory alive by singing his song during the 20th minute of every home fixture this season, highlighting the community’s support in remembering a player who left a profound impact on both clubs.

As Dinis and Duarte walk onto the pitch, it will serve as a reminder not just of loss but of the familial bonds that football nurtures, creating spaces of connection and reflection amidst the competitive landscape.
