Derek Chisora declares Jake Paul’s boxing career is over after defeat to Anthony Joshua
Derek Chisora believes Jake Paul’s boxing career is finished following his brutal defeat to Anthony Joshua, predicting the American will suffer lasting psychological damage from the encounter, reports BritPanorama.
The veteran heavyweight expressed certainty that Paul would never step into the ring again after sustaining a double jaw fracture against the former two-time world champion. “That guy is not going to box anymore. He will not box anymore,” Chisora declared.
The 41-year-old dismissed any notion of a comeback, stating: “You’re mad, after he had a broken jaw he’s going to have PTSD. He’s got a broken jaw, twice, in two places.”
During the bout in Miami, Paul hit the canvas on four separate occasions, exhibiting considerable resilience by rising each time. He managed to last six rounds against the significantly larger and more seasoned Joshua before a decisive right hand ended the contest. Paul required surgery for his fractured jaw, with a recovery period anticipated at a minimum of six months.
Despite criticism from Chisora, who accused Paul of “running” during the fight, the YouTuber-turned-boxer earned respect from several pundits for agreeing to face a former heavyweight world champion. Cruiserweight contender Viddal Riley offered a contrasting perspective, suggesting that Paul’s business obligations could compel him to continue fighting, given his role at Most Valuable Promotions.
Riley pointed to the necessity of Paul’s ongoing involvement to sustain the promotional company and the streaming platforms that rely on his marquee status. “Jake’s got a lot of responsibilities to deliver to all the fighters that are under his banner,” Riley explained, emphasising that events are contingent on Paul’s participation.
Riley also noted that a couple more fights could cement the standing of Most Valuable Promotions, with potential matchups including a high-profile bout against Canelo Alvarez in July 2026. While Chisora stated he would never wake up early for another Paul fight, he made it clear he’d be interested in a showdown between Paul and KSI, likening it to significant rivalries in the boxing world.
Paul is currently being linked with a lucrative showdown against Conor McGregor, although this remains speculative. Joshua, meanwhile, appears set for a return in February, with a potential clash against Tyson Fury later in the year.
In an arena where spectacle often eclipses substance, the aftermath of this bout serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between entertainment and the brutal realities of boxing. The narratives around Paul will continue to unfold, as fans wonder whether he can truly navigate the tumultuous world of professional fighting.
