Deontay Wilder secures split decision victory over Derek Chisora in heavyweight clash
Deontay Wilder secured a split decision triumph over Derek Chisora in a thrilling heavyweight encounter at London’s O2 Arena last night, in what was anticipated to be the British veteran’s farewell to professional boxing, reports BritPanorama.
The 42-year-old Chisora suffered his 14th career defeat in front of a passionate crowd of 20,000, as Wilder emerged victorious after twelve gruelling rounds. Two judges scored the contest 115-111 and 115-113 in favour of the American, while the third official awarded it to Chisora with a score of 115-112.
The match was marked by considerable drama, with both heavyweights exchanging powerful blows in an untidy affair that kept spectators on their feet. In the eighth round, Wilder sent Chisora crashing through the ropes with a devastating right hand, but the Briton remarkably made his way back into the ring to continue the fight.
The intensity escalated in the eleventh round when Chisora again found himself outside the ropes but managed to beat the count once more. Moments later, Wilder fell to the canvas after a combination of a left hand and losing his footing, leading to referee Mark Bates penalising him with a point deduction for pushing during the chaotic exchanges.
Post-fight, Wilder expressed his intent to protect his opponent’s wellbeing during the match. “I had an adorable opponent. I knew Derek was going to bring everything he had,” he stated. The victory offers renewed hope for Wilder’s ambitions of challenging for world honours, following a challenging period where he faced four defeats in his last six bouts.
The win could also reignite discussions regarding a clash with former champion Anthony Joshua, who was in attendance. Wilder entered the bout aware that defeat would severely diminish his chances of facing unified champion Oleksandr Usyk.
