David Coote avoids prison over indecent image charge

David Coote, a former referee, has received a nine-month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to producing an indecent image of a child. This decision was made at Nottingham Crown Court, reports BritPanorama.

The 43-year-old was charged on August 12 last year following an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police. This action followed his dismissal from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December 2024, prompted by a controversial online tirade directed at former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Coote’s sentence is significantly less than the maximum penalty of three years. He admitted to creating a category A video of a 15-year-old boy in January 2020, which depicted the minor in compromising situations. The court was informed that the video, lasting two minutes and 11 seconds, showed the boy removing his school uniform and later performing sexual acts on himself.

The investigation into Coote’s conduct began after he was reported for his comments about Klopp. Subsequent police inquiry discovered the distressing video on a Dell laptop, with the last access recorded on January 2, 2020. Prosecutor Jeremy Janes stated that Coote’s “sexual attraction” to minors came to light during the investigation, which included the analysis of two mobile phones that contained concerning conversations.

Addressing Coote before sentencing, Judge Nirmal Shant remarked on his “spectacular fall from grace.” She noted that the starting point for his type of offense is one year in prison, yet the circumstances of his case were taken into consideration during sentencing. Coote’s defense acknowledged his remorse, citing his mental health struggles and the substantial impact of media attention on his life.

“You had been filmed making comments about the then Liverpool Football Club manager,” Judge Shant said. “The present allegations are unrelated to that but led to the police coming to your home.” In mitigation, his lawyer highlighted Coote’s deep shame regarding the incident and emphasised his efforts to overcome his substance use following his arrest.

This case underscores the complex intersections between personal conduct, public roles, and legal accountability within professional sports, serving as a stark reminder of the scrutiny faced by figures in such positions.
