Danny Kelly reveals throat cancer diagnosis
Sports broadcasting legend Danny Kelly revealed he had been diagnosed with throat cancer on Wednesday afternoon, reports BritPanorama.
The 69-year-old broadcaster announced he is stepping away from his career while he undergoes medical treatment. He has worked for Talksport since 2007, presenting the Trans-Europe Express on Sunday nights, and is a regular on Hawksbee and Jacobs.
During his on-air announcement, the veteran presenter delivered a candid message to his audience, stating: “I need to talk plainly to you all now because the majority of our listeners, better or worse, are men. And men are often very difficult people to talk about and talk to and talk with about medical issues.”
Kelly shared the progression of his diagnosis, saying, “Six weeks ago, I went to the doctor… Instead, it turns out that I have cancer.” He specified that he has cancer of the oesophagus, acknowledging the severity of the condition: “Now look, that’s the bad news. The less bad news… is that the medics say that the thing hasn’t spread inside my body and that they can and they will help me.”
The broadcaster elaborated on his treatment plan, indicating it will involve a challenging regimen of chemotherapy and surgery, stating, “It is a hard road, but one that the doctors are hopeful will see me emerge recovered and healthy at the far end.” Kelly commended Talksport for their support, noting, “They will let me decide when and if I’m okay to talk to you.”
As he prepares to focus on his health, Kelly emphasized the importance of addressing medical concerns promptly: “If you feel something just isn’t right in your body… for God’s sake, go to the doctor. Get yourself checked out.” He concluded with appreciation for his audience, saying, “Meanwhile, your prayers, best wishes, positive vibes, whatever you can, will be gratefully accepted.”
Known for his extensive career, Kelly also served as editor of NME and held the editorial reins at Q magazine, with his writing appearing in The Times. He currently presents the View from the Lane podcast, dedicated to Tottenham Hotspur.
In an era where health has taken centre stage, Kelly’s story serves as both a personal journey and a broader reminder of the significance of addressing health issues head-on, echoing how our professional lives can sometimes hang in the balance amid personal trials.
