Austrian ski jumper disqualified for oversized footwear
Austrian ski jumper Daniel Tschofenig has expressed deep regret after being thrown out of the Winter Olympics men’s large hill individual event final due to oversized footwear, reports BritPanorama.
The 23-year-old admitted he made a critical error by failing to check his new boots before competition. His participation came to an abrupt halt when officials discovered that his boots exceeded the permitted size by four millimetres.
Tschofenig, who had performed strongly in the qualifying round with a score of 137.7, was seen as a genuine medal contender prior to the equipment violation. Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF, Tschofenig reflected, “I was surprised. I wore a new shoe during training, and wasn’t actually that happy with it, but I stuck with it.” He acknowledged his naivety and the stress of the moment, stating, “Unfortunately, I was naive and didn’t measure it. Extremely stupid of me, there was just so much stress going on. But rules are rules.” His chance for Olympic glory was snuffed out as he watched from the sidelines as the final unfolded without him.
The broadcast of the competition brought the news of Tschofenig’s disqualification to light, with TNT Sports commentator Ian Findlay stating, “The big news just after the first round, Tschofenig, disqualified due to boot size, four millimetres over.” The vacancy left by Tschofenig was filled by Slovenia’s Hektor Kapustik, highlighting the competitive nature of the event.
Former Slovenian ski jumper Ernej Damjan noted the significance of Tschofenig’s disqualification, pointing out that despite demonstrating improvement from his training, he was cut short just as he seemed poised to challenge for a medal. The final saw Slovenia’s Domen Prevc take gold, with Japan’s Ren Nikaido winning silver and Poland’s Kacper Tomasiak claiming bronze.
