George Russell named as unexpected contender for Formula 1 championship
George Russell has been identified as the unexpected contender for this year’s Formula 1 championship by former drivers Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert, reports BritPanorama.
During a discussion on the Stay on Track podcast, both Hill and Herbert overlooked the more obvious favourites, which included defending champion Lando Norris and four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Norris, who claimed his first title in December, secured a narrow two-point lead over Verstappen last season, yet neither were selected as top contenders by the two pundits.
Russell’s credentials for the dark horse tag stem from his performances throughout the 2025 campaign. He was the only driver outside the top three to secure a grand prix victory last year, which solidified his reputation as a strong competitor. His consistency, despite piloting machinery that was not always capable of challenging for wins, showcased his potential.
The new engine and aerodynamic regulations coming into effect this season have introduced uncertainty regarding team performance, particularly with the opening race in Melbourne approaching. Speculation in the paddock suggests that Mercedes may have an edge, given their history of adapting quickly to power unit rule changes. Herbert expressed confidence in the team’s prospects, backed by Russell’s impressive form.
“I’m probably going to go Mercedes, because I think, as a partnership at the moment, it’s working very well,” Herbert stated. He also praised Russell’s achievements, stating, “George has done a brilliant job for them. I’m sure they are going to be at the sharp end fighting for race wins and potentially the championship.” Hill concurred, acknowledging Herbert’s insights before remarking on the dark horse nature of Russell’s candidacy.
As the season unfolds, attention will focus on how the new regulations pan out and whether Russell’s potential can translate into tangible success. The excitement for the future remains palpable, and what happens on track will undoubtedly carry echoes of today’s predictions.
