Cristiano Ronaldo embroiled in Saudi league controversy as Ivan Toney criticizes officiating

Cristiano Ronaldo has been dragged into Saudi league cheating claims as Ivan Toney launched a furious attack on officiating following Al-Ahli’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Al-Fayha on Wednesday evening, reports BritPanorama.

The former Brentford striker, who netted his 27th league goal of the campaign, was incensed after his side saw three penalty appeals dismissed by both the on-field referee and VAR. Toney expressed his dissatisfaction emphatically in a post-match interview, stating, “The big talking point was the two penalties. It’s clear as day. I don’t know what more you want him to do? Pick the ball up with two hands, are you going to give a penalty then or not?”

Moreover, Toney alleged that match officials advised Al-Ahli players to concentrate on other competitions during the match. He claimed, “When we tried to talk to the referee, he told us to ‘focus on the AFC [Champions League],’ How can the referee say this?” His criticisms intensified on social media, where he shared footage of the contentious incidents. Toney commented, “It’s actually crazy how you can miss things like this in crucial moments or choose to turn a blind eye. And without saying too much that may get me in trouble, it’s clear what’s being influenced here!!!”

When questioned about potential beneficiaries of such officiating decisions, Toney made a veiled reference to Ronaldo’s league-leading Al-Nassr. He further indicated that the referee had admitted one of the penalty claims was legitimate during stoppage time, sarcastically noting, “Like that’s going to help.” His teammate Galeno reinforced these allegations, directly accusing league authorities of attempting to manipulate the title race.

The Al-Ahli club has voiced its displeasure, issuing a statement expressing “deep dissatisfaction” with the officiating errors and their effect on the championship. They have formally requested access to all recordings and communications between match officials and VAR, demanding clarification for each disputed decision.

Al-Ahli currently sits third in the standings, four points behind Al-Nassr, who also hold a match in hand. If Ronaldo’s side secures the championship, it would mark his first league triumph since his arrival in Saudi Arabia over three years ago. In a striking note, legal experts have warned Toney that his outburst could lead to severe consequences, with Article 5/50 of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s regulations indicating a potential suspension of up to 12 months and a fine reaching £60,000.

As the league race intensifies, the focus remains on the integrity of officiating in Saudi football and the potential implications of this controversy for Toney’s future.
