Cristiano Ronaldo faces fitness concerns ahead of World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo is facing an anxious wait regarding his fitness after being forced off during Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory against Al-Feyha in the Saudi Pro League on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.

The Portuguese star signalled to the bench before departing the pitch in the 80th minute, clearly struggling with discomfort. He was later seen on the substitutes’ bench with ice strapped to the back of his knee.

This incident marks the second time within a week that the 41-year-old has been withdrawn early, having also been substituted before the hour mark in a match against Al-Najma earlier in the week.

Al-Nassr manager Jorge Jesus confirmed that medical staff would conduct immediate assessments. He stated: “Ronaldo suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff will urgently perform the necessary tests to determine his condition.” The timing of this latest setback is concerning, as the World Cup is just three months away.

Should this injury prove to be serious, it could deny the veteran forward the chance for an unprecedented sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament. Portugal has received a favourable group stage draw, featuring Colombia, Uzbekistan, and either DR Congo, Jamaica, or New Caledonia.

Ronaldo’s impending absence raises significant concerns for the Portuguese national team, particularly given that this World Cup is widely perceived as his last. He experienced a frustrating outing as he missed a penalty while the match was still goalless.

Despite these challenges, Ronaldo remains a top contender for the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot, currently sitting third in the standings with 21 goals this campaign. He has also accumulated 964 goals in his professional career, needing just 36 more to reach the landmark of 1,000 goals.

Al-Nassr currently holds the top position in the Saudi Pro League, with a two-point lead over second-placed Al-Ahli. Ronaldo’s contribution has been crucial to the club’s title aspirations, making the outcome of his medical examinations crucial for both his club and international commitments.

As the season enters a decisive phase, the stakes are high for Al-Nassr and Ronaldo in their pursuit of glory. The forward is not only the highest goal-scorer in men’s international football, with 143 goals for Portugal, but he has also made history by scoring in five different World Cups and four European Championships.

In what is shaping up to be a bittersweet run towards the World Cup, Ronaldo’s ongoing pursuit of excellence amid fitness concerns serves as a reminder of the fine line between legacy and the reality of competitive sport.
