Cristiano Ronaldo announces impending retirement

Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated he has one or two years remaining in his football career before retirement, with the 2026 World Cup finals expected to be his last, reports BritPanorama.

The 40-year-old Portuguese forward made these comments during a video link interview at an event in Riyadh, following earlier statements suggesting that his retirement was approaching. Initially, Ronaldo quipped that “soon” could mean “in 10 years.”

He elaborated, stating, “When I mean soon… I’m really enjoying the moment right now. As you know in football, when you reach some age you count the months very quick. So, the moment is good, I feel very good in this moment, I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp.” Ronaldo acknowledged his enjoyment of the game with both Al Nassr and the national team but admitted, “when I mean ‘soon’ it’s probably one, two years I’ll still be in the game.”

When asked directly if the 2026 World Cup would mark the end of his international career, he confirmed, “Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old and I think it will be the moment, and in a big competition.”

Ronaldo reflected on his extensive career, stating that he has “given everything for football” over the past 25 years, accumulating many records both at club level and internationally. He remains proud despite the World Cup being the most significant trophy that has eluded him, having won the Euros with Portugal in 2016.

In June, Ronaldo signed a two-year contract with Al Nassr, further showcasing his commitment to continue performing at a high level. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, he has left an enduring legacy through his time at clubs such as Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr. His accolades include five Ballon d’Or trophies and 34 senior trophies combined for club and country.

With the anticipation surrounding the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo’s impending farewell not only marks the end of an era but also serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of sporting greatness. Fans and fellow athletes alike will undoubtedly look on with a mix of nostalgia and appreciation as his storied career approaches its conclusion.
