Coco Gauff reaches Miami Open semi-finals, claims to be fastest competitor

Coco Gauff advanced to the semi-finals of the Miami Open on Tuesday evening, defeating Belinda Bencic in a hard-fought three-set match that concluded 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, reports BritPanorama.

In a post-match interview, the 22-year-old American expressed her views on speed within women’s tennis, openly declaring, “I definitely think that on court I am the fastest.” Her performance against Bencic showcased her defensive skills and exceptional court coverage, crucial in securing her victory.

Gauff elaborated on her speed compared to other players on the tour, suggesting that her rivals, including Sloane Stephens, Iga Swiatek, and Maria Sakkari, would be stronger competitors in shorter sprint distances. “I think 100 metres is different. I feel I would definitely be in the top three or top four for sure,” she stated. However, she maintained confidence for longer distances, asserting, “Over 200 metres I definitely think I am the fastest. The longer the race the better for me, I think that’s the same in tennis! The longer the better.”

Regarding her challenging match against Bencic, Gauff remarked on the physical demands, saying, “Every time we play it’s a long match. It took a lot of running today, some falls. I’m really proud of how I fought today.” She noted that raising her game in crucial moments has been a recurring theme throughout the tournament.

Looking ahead, Gauff will face Karoline Muchova in the semi-finals, as Muchova advanced by defeating Victoria Mboko 7-5, 7-6 earlier on Tuesday. The upcoming clash promises to be another significant test for Gauff’s resilience and speed on the court.

As sporting narratives intertwine with personal assertions, Gauff’s bold claim about her speed not only stirs debate but also reflects the competitive spirit that characterises the women’s circuit. It’s a reminder of how athletes navigate the intersection of confidence and competition, ever eager to establish their legacy.
